Bachelors degree in physics, classes in astronomy, math, and computer science. This will cost you money.

Masters degree in physics, astrophysics, or astronomy chart. If combined with a PhD, you can get paid to go to grad school (something like $16,000 to $25,000 a year).

PhD in physics, astrophysics, or astronomy. Pay - see above.

Postdoctoral research appointment (about 60% of astronomers do one) at a university, national lab (like NOAO or LANL) or NASA (Goddard, Huntsville, JPL, etc). This usually pays about $40,000 at a university, $50,000 - $100,000 at NASA or a national lab (LANL pays the most).

Job - if at a university, it goes Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Full Professor (with tenure). At a lab or NASA, it would just be a job with pay raises once in a while called 'Astronomer', 'Astrophysicist', or 'Physicist'. This can pay anywhere from $40,000 (for an assistant prof at a small college) to $200,000 (for head of a department at NASA or a large university).

PhD candidate in physics (astrophysics), Sims fan
