I’m planning to buy a telescope. How do I know which one to buy?

My birthday is coming up and I want to look into some astronomical observing. I'm a beginner to this. My spending limit is around $250-$300. I've really enjoyed it with my pretty good binoculars but I'm ready to go deeper into it. What do you suggest for a beginner backyard observer for $250-300?
